A look at a new water sterilisation device that aims to provide clean water in a matter of seconds.

An inspiring piece of product design has come out of Loughborough University – a new drinking water sterilisation device that uses UV light to eliminate bacteria. The design was dreamt up by Timothy Whitehead, and has won the UK heat of the Dyson Award.

The new product sterilises water in just 90 seconds, much quicker than the 30 minutes that traditional chlorine and iodine tablets take – and without leaving a nasty taste.

As Timothy says: ‘I began to experiment with using ultraviolet light to sterilise water quickly, without any distortion to taste.’

Attaining clean drinking water is a very big issue in the developing world and in disaster situations where clean drinking water is very hard to come by. The design will be going up against international heat finalists for the main award – who wins will be decided by Dyson engineers, international judges and James Dyson himself.

While developing products that fit a gap in the market is one of the main focuses of Applied Product Design, there is particular delight when a design appears that helps the population of the world with a crucial need. Whether you have a unique idea for a piece of product design that solves a problem related to a luxury or a necessity, get in touch with us today to see how we can develop it to the degree where it ready to go to market.

The seat represents a completely new approach to infant seating product design, ensuring the child has fun while the parent has more 'me time'. Here at Applied Product Design we love ideas like this; innovation that makes life more enjoyable and easier.

Until you see the 4Mums mamaRoo in the flesh, you’d be forgiven for thinking that infant seating was no more interetsing than a wooden high chair. But this looks like something you would see in a science fiction film, this new seat, however, is a reality. The seat has been designed to sway and move much like a parent would, with several different motions and five different nature sounds.

The new product has been available in the USA for a while already – with 300 retailers having taken on the seat. Now UK customers will be able to purchase the new seat too, retailing at £199 in Mothercare.

In order to be more attractive to UK buyers, the name was changed from 4moms mamaRoo to 4mums mamRoo. The seat looks set to be a popular product, having won several awards including The National Parenting Center’s Seal of Approval, 2010.

The seat represents a completely new approach to infant seating product design, ensuring the child has fun while the parent has more ‘me time’. Here at Applied Product Design we love ideas like this; innovation that makes life more enjoyable and easier.

He has also been the presenter of BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, after having served six years as the BBC’s economics editor. His work and services to the financial world has been recognised and has made him a famous household name.

Before his career in broadcasting took off he worked as an economist for the Institute for Fiscal Studies and London Business School’s Centre for Business Strategy. His expertise has demonstrated his strong abilities to make difficult issues available and accessible to the public. Vice Chancellor of Coventry University, Professor Madeleine Atkins comments “His contribution to financial journalism and the way he continues to make the most complicated issues accessible has not only made him a household name but also a respected authority on his subject.”

Dragon’s Den have shown much success of with viewing ratings going up each year and seeing many budding entrepreneurs see success even if they were not successful with the Dragons themselves. Levi Roots arrived for a book signing in Waterstone’s at the Eden Centre, High Wycombe this week, for the launch of his new book ‘Caribbean Food Made Easy’. Roots rose to fame after successfully enticing dragon Peter Jones into investing in his ‘Reggae Reggae Sauce’ brand. The book signing attracted many fans and proved to be a hit with the shoppers.

Fellow dragon Theo Paphitis has also been busy providing some words of wisdom to a judge on a business pitch panel for children. Kerry Michael, owner of Grand Pier, was the judge for North Somerset Youngsters’ at in Weston, and gained some useful tips from the dragon. The judges also included managers from AGM Holdings, HSBC and North Somerset Council. The competition was held for diploma students who were asked to come with a design for a space within the new Grand Pier. This is set to open next year, with the winner’s idea to be put in place.
